Rough Luck Racing Update

On our way back home now after a day spent in Bedford.

Great to see Daniel again for some work on his MGF mpi. Full cambelt service carried out, fuel pump sender unit was damaged so this was replaced with another. When it came to bleeding the system there was no return to the expansion tank, so jiggle valves removed. When removing the one in the plastic inlet manifold the brass fitting was loose and had come out of the mounting. So we replaced this with a complete aluminum one. Out of the 7 bolts holding the plastic manifold in, there were only the top 3 that were in place, all 4 of the lower studs were missing altogether. Cam cover gasket replaced as had substantial oil leak. Quite a few missing and incorrect bolts and parts all replaced, with some other niggles sorted. One of those everything out the van days, it’s great getting things back to rights. Oh and squirrel evicted too!

Lovely to meet Kathryn finally (after working on her MGBGT earlier in the year), she had bought herself a TF just recently and wanted us to give it a check over. Couple of things noted to be sorted, but all in all she’s got herself a cracking deal!

Really good day in lovely company and fab weather. On our way back home now up the A1.

Well that was a soggy day!

Arrived at Steven’s this morning in Bradford for hydragas ‘full fill’ on his ‘project MGF’, bit of a strange one to do, you will see by the pic! We had to,
at least, put it to a level where it would be off the bump stops, but as the subframe has only just gone in and there is more work to do, it just had to be left at an estimate on pressure.

From there we went to see Alivia again, in Barnsley, as her TF’s clutch was still stiff, freed off again, the next step if it continues will have to be a new release arm.

Then we went over to New Rossington, near Doncaster, as Rob had been having trouble with extremely high emissions on his MGF mpi. Historically the car seems to have had a new cat each year to get it through the mot. Unfortunately, we cannot trace the main fault as can’t connect to the ECU. We will be investigating further to get it sorted.

Nice to get home in good time to get a load of parts packed up for people who have been waiting and have a brew and dry out!

A fairly local one for us today, in Northallerton for work on Stephen’s MGF ‘98 mpi.

Head gasket had gone, Mk 2 elastomer gasket was previously fitted and had gone on piston number 1. Cambelt service carried out with a few other tidy up things done. Coolant loss located to the underfloor pipes so we replaced these with stainless ones.

Baking hot day in the sun, thanks Stephen to your lovely daughter for looking after us in your absence. Enjoy Scotland!

Topless Around the Peak District in aid of UK Homes for Heroes…

Absolutely cracking day with a fantastic turn out, with cars and people coming from far and wide, to raise funds for this very worthy charity, all organised by the lovely Ruth Evans, massive amount of work put in! Great venue found at Crich Tramway and Museum.

So good to see so many friends and have a long awaited catch-up.

We were very proud to be given the opportunity to be sponsors again, hope everyone enjoyed their sweetie bag!

Some great merchandise bought from Jimmy, lovely to see you!

Beautiful weather too.

What an enjoyable day in Stockport today.

Great to meet Jon and his gem of a purchase, an MGF 1.8 VVC’Ruby’ preciously been owned by a Porsche as one of their ‘test the lap’ cars for their experience days. He hadn’t wanted to drive it until he was sure all was sound.

Cambelt service done, including plugs and all filters changed. Underfloor coolant pipes replaced with stainless. Alternator belt fitted, system bled and all up and running nicely.

From there we went a few miles further on and great to meet Stephen, who also had a recent acquisition, an MGF in Copperleaf.

Head gasket and cambelt service carried out, a few other things replaced to get the car up to spec. Lifters were a bit on the tappety side so we added in a tin of good old Wynn’s hydraulic lifter cleaner and the car now sounding so much better.

Lovely hospitality and chats all day and made very welcome with cracking brews, butties and biscuits. Thank you 😊

Now in Glossop to see our friends for the annual charity run.

Corby today and great to meet Charlotte for work on her lovely MGF mpi.

There was limited history when the car was bought so Charlotte asked us to carry out cambelt, water pump and tensioner replacement. Plugs, and all filters replaced too, plus new alternator belt.

Both rear calipers replaced with new.

Fab weather and a good brew, thanks Charlotte!

Rough Luck Racing Update

We collected Robert’s TF135 from Beeford on Sunday ready for some major tlc at the workshop…

Yesterday and today spent working on her. Originally suspected as a seized engine we had intended to swap the entire engine out with one we had in.

Once we started removing more of the engine we discovered that it wasn’t as extensive damage as first thought.

We replaced the piston and liner on number one cylinder, cleaned out the sump as was full of congealed oil, replaced the oil pump and replaced the cylinder head. The timing belt had stripped its teeth and all the exhaust valve heads had snapped off.

New cambelt, water pump, tensioner and all gaskets replaced. Few other little tidy up jobs done.

All up and running again and sounding great, and with an earlier than planned reunion with the owners, which is always a good thing.

Hope you both have some good weather and runs out in her before the winter weather sets in.
